Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kuwait

On 19th February 1971, Sri Lanka and Kuwait established formal diplomatic relations. Sri Lanka appointed its first resident Ambassador to Kuwait and opened its Embassy in 1982. Kuwait opened its resident Mission in Colombo in October 1995. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to re-open its Embassy in Kuwait after the Gulf War. Both countries celebrated 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on 19th February 2021. As early as 1963, Sri Lanka extended its support for the entry of Kuwait to the United Nations after it became a fully independent state in June 1961. 

Kuwait is a major destination for Sri Lankan expatriates and at present, over 175,000 Sri Lankan nationals live and work in Kuwait. The presence of such a large number of Sri Lankans provides a strong link between the two countries. There is considerable scope for Sri Lanka to develop relations with Kuwait in the fields of employment, trade, construction, infrastructure, education and health services. Remittances from Sri Lankan workers in Kuwait amounted to USD 729.3 million in 2024 and USD 839.8 million in 2025, significantly contributing to the Sri Lankan economy.  

Sri Lanka and Kuwait work closely at the United Nations and its affiliated agencies and have supported each other's candidatures on numerous occasions. 

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) extends loans on concessionary term to finance development projects and provides technical assistance to finance the cost of the feasibility studies of development projects in Sri Lanka
